First you ask his/her level of experience by checking the background and getting names, addresses and phone numbers of persons who he has worked with before. Contact them and enquire whether the photographer’s work was good and satisfactory.

Personality is another concern to confirm whether his ideas are the same as yours and you can contact him easily. That means he is shrewd enough to understand your requirements like your ideas about the style of photographs you expect from him/her.

Another important matter is style of photography i.e. the wedding pictures shown to you are appealing to you and you appreciate his/her style. You should examine the wedding photographs at various angles and conclude whether they are well taken and well developed.           

References help you a lot in judging a photographer better by meeting with them in person who will show you the photographer's works. Study the photographs closely and ask their sincere opinion about the photographer and if they are satisfied with the outcome of his work. If a person hesitates to give you the references, no doubt he is not the ideal photographer you are chasing.        

Next, the photographer will present you with the packages. Enquire about each package and if you feel uncomfortable with the packages, don't hesitate to ask him/her whether it is possible to prepare one that satisfies your needs.

Another important question is how much time he will take to finish your album, your bridal portrait and all the photos taken during the wedding. Also see whether you can afford his services. If you can't, decide whether he/she is worth the price difference compared to other photographers you have met before. Regarding payments and deposits, ascertain if the photographer will make a refund in the case of a cancellation. If, by any chance, he/she fails to show up for the wedding what is the alternative? Then will he/she arrange another smart photographer to take his/her place? Discuss with him/her every point openly and clear all your doubts and concerns at the time of interview. If his/her answers are convincing, you might appoint him as your wedding photographer.                

Check and read the contract carefully before signing it.  If that contains something that you don’t understand, ask him to clarify it or take your own time to study it properly.  Make sure that all the terms you both had agreed on are in the contract.
